The Football craze

Alright, I admit its been two months since my last post. There hasn't been anything interesting since. But with the FIFA World Cup going on, of course there is something interesting to write. It's already mid way through the first round and we've already seen some remarkable performances and results from the many qualified nations. It's just getting more and more interesting.

Who do I support? Well, debutant Trinidad and Tobago is apparently the nation that I support and not Iran as most of you might have thought. Why Trinidad? That's question posed by many. Does it make a difference to them? I am sure it doesn't but I still chose to support it. Why? Well, I have supported Brazil in the 1994 World Cup, then Italy in 1998 World Cup, I can't recall which team I supported in 2002. Been tired of hearing all these big names. And Trinidad being a debutant proves they are World Class Quality. Did you watch the game against Sweden? They held them 0-0 for ninety good minutes. What a joyous celebration it was after the final whistle blew. It easily looked like as though they won the World Cup itself. A deserved draw indeed.

The next game was against England where we saw them loose by two goals to nothing. But I was still happy with their performace. They held England 0-0 for 82 minutes before Crouch found the net and just a minute before the final whistle Gerrard got lucky with a powerful left shot to confirm England in round two. But let me look at the positive side. Both English goals came from Liverpool players. And I am a Liverpool supporter. So that makes me happy. Sportsman spirit isn't it? Trinidad have still one more game to prove they are worthy of being in the second round. And that's against Paraguay who have lost by a goal to England and also lost by a goal to Sweden. It's surely going to be a tough game and Trinidad would have to win by a good margin to be hopeful to book themselves in the knock-out stage.

Argentina's young side have proven themselves strong contenders of the World Cup with a remarkable performace against Serbia and Montenegro thrashing them 6-0. They created great chances and made confident finishings to book their place to the next round. I just loved those back flips they created. It brings so much charm in football. But of course shouldn't be so often. Brazil haven't started as much as they would be expected. Winning both games have surely booked them in the round of 16. We have yet to see some of those Brazillian touches when the ball gets to their feet. Its so obvious they are the most favoured team. Spain have already shown they are glory competitors with a 4-0 win in their first game itself. A good side they surely have brought. They'd have to maintain consistency now. Surprisingly Italy's performance is becoming a question when they drew 1-1 against USA who lost 3-0 to Czech who lost 2-0 to Ghana. And Ghana on the first day lost 2-0 to Italy. This is the difference between Science and Football.

So who is going cherish the glory for the coming four years? Who is going to lift the gold trophy, a prestige every nation wants to boast? Who is it going to be? Remember! It's football. The game is not over until the final whistle is blown. So let's see.
